Packing and Moving Tips

1 month or more before your move:

  • Schedule a moving estimate

1 month before your move:

  • Reserve your move date
  • Schedule delivery of your boxes and packing materials
  • Begin organizing and packing

1 to 2 weeks prior to your move:

  • Mail change of address form provided by your post office
  • Finish up most of your packing.
  • Make special arrangements for transporting pets, plants, flammables, pressurized tanks, ammunition, and guns.
  • Contact your insurance company to cancel current home coverage and set up new home insurance.
  • Update your billing address on bank accounts, credit cards, bills and stock accounts.
  • If you do not have the time to clean, hire a cleaning service.
  • Arrange for baby and animal sitters on move day at both ends. This is for their safety and the movers' safety.
  • Arrange for yard services to be discontinued.
  • Pack your "travel kit" of essential items that will travel with you in your vehicle. These items may include: medications, checkbook, toiletries, cash, pet food, baby food, flashlight, child care items and your moving files.

The day before you move:

  • Set aside items that you will need for the final clean up.
  • Unplug and defrost the refrigerators and freezers.
  • Clean refrigerator and oven remembering to allow them time to air out.
  • Put a box of baking soda or charcoal in them to keep them both fresh.
  • Disconnect and label TV's, computer and stereo equipment cables. (This will make reconnecting much easier and faster).
  • Finish up any last-minute packing
  • If you have arranged for us to pack. Please set aside the items you will need until you are unpacked in your new home.

The morning of the move:

On the day of your move, we will provide a staff of trained moving professionals to ensure your move is done quickly, efficiently and with the utmost care.

  • Have the children and pets out of the house or in a safe place in the home away from hazards.
  • Strip all beds of their linens and be ready for the movers to dismantle and load the beds.
  • Keep all dissambled hardware pieces in a properly labeled Ziplock bag to ensure putting the furniture back together is easy./li>
  • Make sure your driveway, stairs, and hallways are free of obstructions.
  • Be on hand to conduct a walk through the house with the mover so he understands the scope the move. Answer questions and give directions for the move requirements.
  • Know where you want your furniture placed ahead of time. Movers want to place an item one time if possible.
  • Color code, name, or number rooms so that they correspond to move out location. This greatly speeds the unloading time and gets the boxes in the right locations.

  • Your basement, attic, or garage are perfect places to start packing.
  • Make sure all box seams (especially the bottom seams) are sealed securely with packing tape to ensure safe handling.
  • Fill in empty spaces within the boxes with packing paper to prevent shifting and potential damage to your items.
  • Make sure you pack your belongings properly and label each box clearly. Each box should have a description of the contents and the name of the room to which the contents belong.
  • Pack books and other heavy objects in small boxes so that they are easier to handle.
  • Disassemble large furniture or other awkwardly shaped items so that they will fit easily through the door and take up less space in the moving truck.
  • Squat (don't bend over) and use your legs to lift any heavy objects.
